A recent study in the UK declared that one of the most stressful jobs is that of a librarian. Well, that didn't come as much of a shock to me being one for my day job. People have this idea that librarians get to sit around all day in the quiet reading whatever book takes their fancy - for example whenever you mention your profession people ask "so what's your favourite book?". In reality, many of us never get to touch the books and our job is more of a combination of teacher/social worker/counsellor/mediator where we spend a lot of time listening to people's problems and trying to find info to help them (or ways to back away slowly from the front counter).
People also assume that librarians walk around all day saying "shhh" in their twinsets and pearls (actually, a cardigan is a very handy and versatile piece of clothing!) so this design is inspired by the stereotype of the shushing librarian with what many of us (I'm sure) are really thinking.
